Apple bans hundreds of iPhone apps that secretly gathered personal info

Most of the 256 affected apps were made in China, but they were available worldwide on the app store and were downloaded 1 million times, according to app analytics service SourceDNA , which first discovered the problem. The apps' creators used a software development kit from a Chinese advertising company called Youmi, which allowed the developers to put ads in their apps. That's kosher. But Youmi's software gathered information about the people who downloaded the apps, including their email addresses and iPhone serial numbers -- sending all that data to Youmi's servers. That skirted Apple's strict privacy guidelines for app developers. And the way Youmi designed the software hid that fact from the developers and Apple's iTunes App Store gatekeepers. SourceDNA did not say which apps were affected. The company told Apple about the problem on Sunday, and Apple removed the apps on Monday. "This is a violation of our security and p...

One third americans would be fine military taking over

Blame the 2016 Republican presidential candidates (cough,  Donald Trump , cough) or the recent stock market meltdown or Americans' general conviction that the country is going to hell, but a recent poll showed that one-third of U.S. citizens aren't satisfied with their government. In fact, 30 percent would support a military takeover,  The Guardian   reports .  The numbers come from a  YouGov survey , which polled 1,000 people online. The exact question asked was, "Is there any situation in which you could imagine yourself supporting the U.S. military taking over the powers of federal government?" Interestingly, Republicans were twice as likely as Democrats to answer 'yes' to the question; 43 percent of Republicans said they could imagine supporting a military coup, while only 20 percent of Democrat said they'd support the move. About 30 percent of self-identified independent voters said they could get behind a military takeover. Although the numbers loo...

Mecca disastrous crash

Mecca (Saudi Arabia) (AFP) - Saudi authorities said Saturday the annual hajj pilgrimage would go ahead despite a crane collapse that killed 107 people at Mecca's Grand Mosque, where crowds returned to pray a day after the disaster. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have already arrived in Mecca for the hajj, one of the world's largest religious gatherings which last year drew two million worshippers. Parts of the Grand Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites, remained sealed off Saturday around the remains of the red and white crane, accentuating the crush of humanity inside. Worshippers thronged the mosque as the midday call to prayer sounded, according to an AFP reporter. Indonesians and Indians were among those killed when the crane collapsed during a storm on what is the main weekly prayer day for Muslims. Around 200 others were injured. A Saudi official said this year's hajj, expected to start on September 21, would proceed despite the tragedy. "It defini...
